Japan Workshops in 2018

In 2018, Japan Desk Scotland ran workshops on Japan at various places in Scotland and beyond.  The workshops from January to March and then from August to December were supported by a grant from the Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation.

● 18 January: Queensferry Primary School, Edinburgh, Scotland, for two P7 Classes, which included the screening of ‘Yawata Primary, Soma City, Fukushima‘;

● 22 January: ‘Japanese Club’ at Cumbernauld Academy, North Lanarkshire, Scotland, on ‘Japanese calligraphy’;

● 29 January and 5 and 26 February: Hillhead Primary School, Glasgow, Scotland, with Taiko workshops for three P5 classes;

● 1 February: Clydemuir Primary School, West Dunbartonshire, Scotland, for two P7 classes, which included hagoita, origami, Q&A on Japan, and the screening of ‘Yawata Primary, Soma City, Fukushima‘;

● 19 February: ‘Japanese Club’ at Cumbernauld Academy, North Lanarkshire, Scotland, on ‘tofu’ and fermentation;

● 22 February: ‘Japan Club’ at Coatbridge High School, North Lanarkshire, Scotland;

● 19 March: ‘Japanese Club’ at Cumbernauld Academy, North Lanarkshire, Scotland, on ‘noodles’;

● 21 March: Festival Park Day Nursery, Glasgow, Scotland, for two workshops;

● 22 March: ‘Japan Club’ at Coatbridge High School, North Lanarkshire, Scotland, on ‘manga’;

● 23 April: ‘Japanese Club’ at Cumbernauld Academy, North Lanarkshire, Scotland, on ‘green tea’;

● 26 April: ‘Japan Club’ at Coatbridge High School, North Lanarkshire, Scotland, on ‘convenience stores in Japan’:

● 2, 9 and 16 May: Hillhead Primary School, Glasgow, Scotland, with ‘origami’ workshops for four P1 classes;

● 3 May: St Mark’s Primary School, Hamilton, South Lanarkshire, Scotland, for a joint workshop for P6, P6/7 and P7 classes;

● 9 and 14 May: Hillhead Primary School, Glasgow, Scotland, for a workshop on school life in Glasgow for four P6 classes, including the screening of ‘Yawata Primary, Soma City, Fukushima‘ at one of the class;

● 11 May: Laurieston Primary School, Falkirk, Scotland, for a workshop on Japan for P4 class;

● 21 May: ‘Japanese Club’ at Cumbernauld Academy, North Lanarkshire, Scotland, on ‘Chai Party’;

● 24 May: Holytown Primary School, North Lanarkshire, Scotland, for P6 class, including the screening of ‘Yawata Primary, Soma City, Fukushima‘;

● 30 May: Machanhil Primary School, Larkhall, South Lanarkshire, Scotland, for P4 class, including the screening of ‘Yawata Primary, Soma City, Fukushima‘;

● 6 September: Dalry Primary School, North Ayrshire, Scotland, for two P6 classes;

● 26 September: Scotstown Primary School, Dyce, Aberdeen, Scotland, for P6/7 and P7 classes;

● 3 October: Hayocks Primary School, North Ayrshire, Scotland, for two P7 classes;.

● 10 October: St Cuthbert Primary School, Glasgow, Scotland, for P7/6 class;

● 25 October: Twechar Primary School, East Dunbartonshire, Scotland, for P6/7 class, including a screening of ‘Yawata Primary, Soma City, Fukushima‘;

● 29 October: ‘Japanese Club’ at Cumbernauld Academy, North Lanarkshire, Scotland, on ‘Sports day in Japan’;

● 1 November: Dunblane Primary School, Stirling, Scotland, for two P6 classes, including the screening of ‘Yawata Primary, Soma City, Fukushima;’

● 5 November: Quarter Primary School, South Lanarkshire, Scotland, for P5/7 class, including the screening of ‘Yawata Primary, Soma City, Fukushima‘;

● 9 November: Laurieston Primary School, Falkirk, Scotland, for P4 class, including the screening of ‘Yawata Primary, Soma City, Fukushima’;

● 12 November: ‘Japanese Club’ at Cumbernauld Academy, North Lanarkshire, Scotland, on ‘Snowland in Japan’;

● 15 November: Woodside Primary School, South Lanarkshire, Scotland, for two P5 classes, including the screening of ‘Yawata Primary, Soma City, Japan‘:

● 19-24 November: Department of Japanese Language and Literature, University of Bucharest, Bucharest, Romania: ‘Chai Party’ on 19th; the screening of ‘Evacuation Order in Fukushima – July 2017‘ for the first-year Masters class on 20th; participation in conversation in Japanese with high school students on 21st; the screening of ‘Design Kimono – Koji Yoshie‘, ‘Hiroshima after Fukushima‘ and ‘Live a tradition in Maramureṣ, Romania‘ for the first-year undergraduate class on 22ed; the talk on culture translation for the first-year Masters class in the Department of English on 22nd; and the demonstration on how to make ‘bento’ (lunch box) on 23rd.

● 3 December: Thornliebank Primary School, East Renfrewshire, Scotland, for P6 class, including the screening of ‘Yawata Primary, Soma City, Fukushima‘;

● 17 December: ‘Japanese Club’ at Cumbernauld Academy, North Lanarkshire, Scotland, on ‘Christmas in Japan’; and

● 19 December: Greengairs Primary School, North Lanarkshire, Scotland, for P6/7 class, including the screening of ‘Yawata Primary, Soma City, Fukushima‘.
