Japan workshops in 2016

In 2016, Japan Desk Scotland ran workshops on Japan at various places in Scotland and beyond.  The workshops from January to March and then from August to December were supported by the grant from the Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation.

● 11 January: ‘Japanese Club’ at Cumbernauld Academy, North Lanarkshire, Scotland, with an activity on Japanese calligraphy;

● 27 January: Japan@Strathclyde workshop at University of Strathclyde Chaplaincy Centre, Glasgow, Scotland, with ‘origami workshop’;

● *28 January: New Machar Primary School (P7 and P6/7), Aberdeenshire, Scotland;

● 3 February: Japan@Stratchlyde workshop at University of Strathclyde Chaplaincy Centre, Glasgow, Scotland, on ‘Hiroshima’;

● *4, 11 and 18 February: Hillhead Primary School, Glasgow, Scotland, with ‘Taiko’ workshops for three P5 classes.

● *8 February: Cleeves Primary School, Glasgow, Scotland (P6 and P6/5), Glasgow, Scotland;

● 10 February: Japan@Strathclyde workshop at University of Strathclyde Chaplaincy Centre, Glasgow, Scotland, on ‘Diversity in Japan’.

● 15 February: ‘Japanese Club’ at Cumbernauld Academy, North Lanarkshire, Scotland, on ‘tea’.

● 17 February: Japan@Strathclyde workshop at University of Strathclyde Chaplaincy Centre, Glasgow, Scotland, on ‘Fukushima’, with the screening of ‘Our friends in Fukushima‘ and ‘Here and there in Fukushima.’ [Fukushima]

● 7 March: ‘Japanese Club’ at Cumbernauld Academy, North Lanarkshire, Scotland, on ‘manga’.

● 17 April: The Michi Biraki Festival held at Bucharest Botanic Gardens by the students and the staff of Department of Japanese Language and Literature, University of Bucharest, Romania, with the screening of ‘Fukushima: 2011-2015‘ and support for the Taiko workshop. [Romania]

● 18-20 April: Department of Japanese Language and Literature, University of Bucharest, Bucharest, Romania: on kanji (Chinese characters) for the second-year students on Monday 18th, and participation in two classes for the third-year students on Tuesday 19th and Wednesday 20th. [Romania]

● *28 April and 12 and 19 May: Hillhead Primary School, Glasgow, Scotland, with ‘origami’ workshops for three P1 classes;

● *18 May: Burnside Primary School. South Lanarkshire, Scotland, with ‘Taiko’ workshop with P7 class. The P7 pupils sang ‘kobuta tanuki kitsune neko’ and performed ‘taiko’ at the Levers’ Assembly held on 21 June at Burnside Blairbeth Church;

● 23 May: ‘Japanese Club’ at Cumbernauld Academy, North Lanarkshire, Scotland, on ‘ageing society’;

● 3 June: ‘Japanese Club’ at Hutchesons’ Grammar School, Glasgow, Scotland, with ‘Taiko’ workshop;

● *8 June: Broomhill Primary School, Glasgow, Glasgow, Scotland (two P5 classes);

● 13 June: ‘Japanese Club’ at Cumbernauld Academy, North Lanarkshire, Scotland, on ‘kawaii’;

● *22 June: Kippen Primary School, Stirling, Scotland (P5/6 and P6/7 classes), with ‘taiko’:

● 5 August: Castlemilk Youth Complex, Glasgow, Scotland, with taiko, calligraphy and origami;

● 5 September: ‘Japanese Club’ at Cumbernauld Academy, North Lanarkshire, Scotland, on Japanese ancient history;

● 12 September: Department of Japanese Language and Literature, University of Bucharest, Bucharest, Romania, with workshops on ‘Onigiri’ (rice ball) and ‘Obento’ (lunch box). [Romania]

● 19 September: ‘Japanese Club’ at Cumbernauld Academy, North Lanarkshire, Scotland, on Japan’s school, with the screening of ‘Yawata Primary, Soma City, Fukushima Prefecture‘. In addition, ‘Sophie’s Glasgow‘ was shown, as this was sent to Yawata Primary.

● *6 October: Carmyle Primary School, Glasgow, Scotland (P6 class), including the showing of ‘Yawata Primary School‘.

● 12 October: ‘Japan@Strathclyde‘ workshop at University of Strathclyde Chaplaincy Centre, Glasgow, Scotland, on ‘Inclusive Glasgow, Inclusive Scotland’, with the screening of ‘Our Scotland: a Japanese perspective‘, ‘The bird, the tree, the bell and the fish of Glasgow‘ and ‘Teaching English in Japan – Carolyn Biggs‘.

● 26 October: Japan@Strathclyde workshop at University of Strathclyde Chaplaincy Centre, Glasgow, Scotland, on ‘Hiroshima’ with the screening of ‘Hiroshima in 2013‘.

● 31 October: ‘Japanese Club’ at Cumbernauld Academy, North Lanarkshire, Scotland, on ‘community’.

● *2 November: Blacklaw Primary School, East Kilbride, Scotland (P7 class), including the showing of ‘Yawata Primary School‘.

● 16 November: ‘Chai Party for All’, Department of Japanese Language and Literature, University of Bucharest, Bucharest, Romania.

● 23 November: Japan@Strathclyde workshop at University of Strathclyde Chaplaincy Centre, Glasgow, Scotland, with ‘origami’ workshop.

● *25 November: Stenhousemuir Primary School, Falkirk, Scotland (three P7 classes), including the showing of ‘Yawata primary School‘.

● 12 December: ‘Japanese Club’ at Cumbernauld Academy, North Lanarakshire, Scotland, on ‘tofu’.
